Truth be said, I'm afraid it's a noise that you may get very familiar with, due to the roof being improperly installed. There should have been lathe strips attached to decking substrate and then the metal attached to the lathe strips. In all reality a felt underlayment on the decking before installing the lathe strips would also have been recommended. The metal will continue to bow and flex with all weather changes.

It is best to remove all three layers before installing metal roofing. I strongly suggests NOT tearing off the shingles on oneside and leaving them on the other side. If you're going to put on metal roofing, do the whole thing.

I lve in Colorado could you give some roofing advice. Is it ideal to put metal roofing on over old asphalt shingles (providing it's less than three layers) or to tear off all the old shingles first? And does it hurt anything to tear off the shingles on one side and leave them on the other side and put the metal roof on?

You should replace your damaged roof shingles if you notice that they are buckling, crackling or bending or else your home may suffer serious damage.
