Installing Corrugated Metal Roofing
Many people these days are deciding to install one of the various types of metal roofing systems on their homes. There are a lot of advantages to choosing this type of system, whether you go with standing seam metal roofing or corrugated metal roofing. Steel metal roofing tends to be relatively lightweight, long lasting, and maintenance free. It is also weather and fire resistant, and it can be recycled should you ever wish to change your roofing. You can also end up with lower energy bills if you choose corrugated galvanized metal roofing that has been painted to be more reflective. Corrugated metal roofing is relatively easy to install. If you want to make sure that the job is perfectly done, you can hire an experienced professional to install your roof. However, if you want to save a little money and you are pretty handy, you can actually install this type of roofing on your own with the help of a few friends. You will need to have at least two people on the roof (one to hold each end of the sheets), and one on the ground to pass up the materials as they are needed. Although this type of roofing can be installed over your current roof, many people prefer to remove the old roofing first. In some cases this might be required by law, especially if there are already multiple roofing layers on the roof. Once this has been done, you will want to waterproof the roof by putting down something like tar paper, felt paper, or roofing paper, starting at the bottom of the roof and overlapping layers until you reach the top. Just like with the roofing paper, you will want to install your corrugated metal roofing from the bottom to the top and overlap the layers slightly to help prevent water from getting in between the metal and the rest of your roof. Screws are usually the preferred method for installing this type of roofing, although you could use nails as well. If you use screws, put the screws in flat part of the roof, and if you use nails, you should put them in the ridges. Be especially careful to keep your corrugated metal roofing sheets straight when you install them. Try holding the pieces you are attaching with a pliers to keep them steady while you put in the screws or nails to make this a bit easier.
