An Attic Vent Will Increase The Energy Efficiency Of Your Home
Many people do not understand just how important proper ventilation of the attic space in their home actually is. To a large degree, the amount of energy people will use in air conditioning and heating their home is related to adequate ventilation of the attic. An attic vent is something your home must have in order for the proper exchange of air, both hot and cold, to take place above your actual living space. Also very important in this consideration is the life of the roof itself which is dramatically affected by the ventilation in the attic. So it is easy to see that attic space ventilation is extremely important for successful home maintenance.
The movement of air through the attic begins with the attic soffit. This is the underside space between the edge of your roof and the outside wall of your home. There should be roof soffit vents at regular intervals all the way around your home. The air moves into these vents and up through the attic and eventually out again through attic exhaust vents or gable vents. The gables of your home are the peak walls where the roof line ends. During the summer months the air circulation forces extremely hot air out through the attic vent while cooler air comes in through the roof soffit vents. During the winter months air circulating will keep excess moisture from building up in the attic and will help prevent ice dams from forming along the edge of the roof

Some people prefer to use electric attic exhaust vents or roof ventilators. These operate automatically by sensors that indicate the amount of heat or moisture in the attic space. The end result of all of the attic ventilation systems is that the air in the attic will keep moving, thereby assisting with cooling in the summer and heating in the winter. People become concerned about the level of insulation in their attics and some simply apply much more material thinking that will take care of any heating or cooling problems. They may actually create a problem if they are not careful when applying insulation. Everyone needs to make sure that the roof soffit vents are not covered up with insulation, eliminating the proper flow of air through the attic. There are styrofoam pieces that can be added between your roof trusses that extend down to the soffit area that will keep the vents open. In order for the attic vent to work properly there has to be a clean and open flow of air through the space.
